Firefighters fought against wind-driven brush fires burning over steep, rugged terrain south of Apple Valley.
The ranch fire that burned 4,205 acres of vegetation is now 10% contained, the California Department of Forestry announced Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday afternoon, the fire destroyed at least two structures and multiple vehicles, according to video footage from OnScenetV.
The ground condition is expected to be dry on Wednesday, with humidity topping at 15%, and gusts of wind at the top of the ridge reaching up to 30 mph, said Cal Fire spokesman Chloe Castillo. The wind is expected to pick up early in the afternoon, and conditions are unlikely to settle on Thursday overnight.
The fire was first reported after 2pm on Tuesday and quickly spread with strong winds changing. Within two hours, the fire spread across 1,500 acres.
“The fire burned a large amount of vegetation, transforming from the northeast to the south wind, spreading the fire in both directions,” Castillo said.
Another factor that complicated the response to fire was lowland smoke. The lack of vision has hampered the effectiveness of aircraft supporting firefighters, Castillo said.
The evacuation order for the High Desert Area was still in effect Wednesday morning. The evacuation zone extends from Millpass Drive to High Road, about eight miles southeast of Apple Valley.
