Ventura County firefighters were fighting two brush fires Monday night.
The big flame of Hau, the fire, blackened about 40 acres, burned in steep terrain south of the unedited town of Pill in the area around the Santa Clara River. The helicopter was already on the scene and fell into flames.
The Ventura County Fire Department said air tankers and additional helicopters were called to help and “140 firefighters were on the scene or on the way.”
The Howe Fire was first reported Monday around 6:20pm near Tory Canyon and East Gibberson Road south of the river. County officials said mild breezes were expected to send smoke east.
Firefighters, about 16 miles to the southwest, had locked up the Maria fire by Monday evening along the river bottom south of Santa Paula.
Maria Fire burned about 15 acres, with about 140 firefighters involved in the fire service, three helicopters and one dozer.
The fire was first reported around 3:20pm, initially on five acres. Firefighters declared the fire at 7pm, but the crew said they would “continue cleaning work until the evening.”
