After a video that appears to be calling on gangs to interview the immigrant raids, City officials, including the deputy mayor, remained mothers on Wednesday amid growing criticism.
NBC Los Angeles tried to contact Deputy Mayor Gonzalez and Mayor Elizabeth Alcantal Rosa, but did not respond.
Gonzalez was elected to the Gadahi City Council in 2022 as he maintains a full-time job as an administrator for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Her bio from the city’s website teaches her classroom before receiving her PhD from UCLA, Gonzalez is currently the director of the pilot school program.
The website says Gonzalez is “passionate about creating a healthy and safe community,” but we heard that he explicitly mentioned the gang on 18th Avenue and Florencia 13 in social videos.
“I want to know where all the Choros in Los Angeles on 18th Avenue, Florencia, are,” she said in the video. “You guys tag everything and insist on hoods, and now your hood is being invaded by the biggest gangs, so there’s no peep from you.”
In the video, it sounds like Gonzalez is trying to tweak the street gang to take an stance against federal law enforcement, hinting at immigration agents as gangs.
“We are protecting those who are protecting the grass. Where are you?” she said.
The police union at the Los Angeles Police Department immediately denounced the video and called for Gonzalez to step down from office.
“We are particularly furious that everyone is calling on gang members, especially those of the gang members in 18th Avenue and Florencia to commit violence against law enforcement,” said Christian Wecker of the LA Police Protection League, who said comments like her could lead to hurting people.
The Department of Homeland Security has also slammed “demean” comments on social media.
“She is seeking criminal gangs, including the vicious 18th Avenue gang, to commit violence against brave ice law enforcement,” the federal agency said.
Cudahy said Gonzalez’s comments did not reflect comments from the city or other city authorities.
