Competition for New York City mayors intensified this week when independent Gov. Andrew Cuomo called out socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani for owning Ugandan property despite the country’s anti-LGBT policies.
“No-Show Congressman missed this interview while on vacation on his parents’ premises in Uganda, a country that kills LGBTQIA+ people,” Cuomo posted on X on Tuesday.
“Silence is violence. I hereby call for boycotts, sells and sanctions on your property in Uganda and promise to stop them from spending tourist dollars there until they overturn their hateful and discriminatory laws that violate basic human rights.”
Mamdani, born in Uganda, has recently faced criticism after his wedding celebrations last part of June with compounds from a Ugandan family surrounded by armed guards, according to a report in a New York post.

Some, including GOP opponent Curtis Sliwa, have called them hypocrites who have in the past called for police to be refunded for everyday New Yorkers, while adopting strict security in his overseas wedding celebrations.
Cuomo’s post hinted at Mamdani’s strict support for BDS and sanctions against Israel. Mamdani went back to her college days and endured the trajectory of her campaign.

Uganda has a long history of government actions against LGBT individuals, including last year, when Uganda’s constitutional courts upheld anti-gay laws that allow the death penalty for “advanced homosexuality.”

Former New York Governor and independent candidate for New York City mayor, Andrew Cuomo will be attending the funeral of NYPD officer Didal Islam, who was murdered on July 31, 2025 at Parkchester Gem Masjid.
“Queer and trans people all over the United States are facing an increasingly hostile political environment,” says Mamdani’s campaign website.
“New York City must be a shelter for LGBTQIA+ people, but our city’s private institutions are already beginning to fall into Trump’s attacks on trans rights. Meanwhile, the cost of the living crisis facing working-class people across the city faces LGBTQIA+ communities is at a higher rate, and higher rate, than the rest of the city.
“The Mamdani administration will protect LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers, turn NYC into LGBTQIA+ Sanctuary City and establish an office for LGBTQIA+ Affairs by expanding and protecting the entire gender-maintaining city of care.”
