Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that this is why President Donald Trump never sent the National Guard to New York City amid the violent George Floyd riots of 2020.
Cuomo’s comments came in the second, second of two major Democrat debates for the mayor of New York City.
“President Trump did this, Trump won. He did it many times. He sent troops to cities across the country. This is he’s macho and authoritarian. He’s the commander of the chief.” “I told him, so he didn’t send them to New York.

Trump ordered thousands of National Guard and hundreds of Marines to go to Los Angeles over the weekend, quelling unrest and supporting federal immigration authorities in his efforts to deport fraudulent immigrants. During the equally violent 2020 George Floyd Riot, Trump directed federal forces to Washington, D.C., Portland, Oregon, and Portland, Oregon, to end the destruction, danger and chaos.
New York City saw some of the biggest violence during the Floyd riots, but as Kaomo pointed out during the debate, Trump did not deploy federal agents there.

New York City, like Los Angeles, is a self-proclaimed “sanctuary city” that protects illegal immigrants from deportation or prosecution by federal authorities.

During discussions on Thursday night, Cuomo also said he would defend New York City’s Sanctuary Urban Law as mayor.

“In this situation, we are trying to protect immigrants. This is a sanctuary city and we are going to defend the laws of the sanctuary city,” Cuomo said. “We have the NYPD, the largest police officer in the United States. Donald Trump only chooses the fights he can win. He cannot win a fight with me as mayor of New York.”
