Andrew Cuomo has not dropped out of the New York City mayor’s race.

Cuomo, a former three-term New York governor who resigned amid multiple scandals in 2021, has decided for now that he has advanced to the general election as an independent candidate and confirmed with Fox News on Thursday night.

The announcement by Cuomo comes three days after Zohran Mamdani, a progressive startup, shocked the political world.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist national assembly member from Queens who was originally from Uganda, took over 43.5% of the first round’s key informal results, with Cuomo at 36.4%.

While he acknowledged Mamdani’s victory at the primary, Cuomo kept the door open for the November run as a candidate with election rules in New York State Permit.

“I want to look at all the numbers when they come and analyze the rank choice votes. And since I am eligible to run for mayor on an independent line in November, what is the best path for me to help New York City,” Cuomo said in a statement.

Cuomo was facing a deadline at the end of Friday for candidates who were already eligible to run as independents to reject that independent voting line.

The former governor will maintain his place he already secured on the “fight & delivery” voting line earlier this year. However, sources said Cuomo is not yet committed to running an aggressive general election campaign from summer to fall.

If Cuomo drops out of the race at a later date, his name will remain in the general election vote.

When it comes to long shots of the race, Mamdani closed the gap with Cuomo during the final race of the primary race thanks to an energetic campaign focused in part on New York City’s cost of living.

The approval by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive rock star and the most prominent leader on New York City’s left, and Vermont Senator, a progressive champion and two-time democratic presidential candidate, helped Mamdani consolidate most of the New York Democratic base.

Mamdani’s amazing major victory is what makes sense for Democrats across the country

And Mamdani came in first place, riding on the wave of support from her young, first voters.

“I will be the mayor of all New Yorkers,” Mamdani said in his victory speech. “And rather than voted too disillusioned with the long broken political system, whether you voted for me or Governor Cuomo, I will fight for the city that works for you. It’s affordable for you and safe for you.”

With none of the candidates exceeding 50%, the technically counted counts are heading towards a round of elimination of ranked selections. However, the total votes won by Mamdani and other aligned progressive candidates is likely enough to defeat Cuomo as the ranked choices begin on July 1st.

Cuomo saw the writing written on the wall and admitted defeat as the first major result was poured out on Tuesday, compiling Mamdani and told his supporters, “Tonight is his night. He deserves it. He won.”

“In the general election, more people come out to vote. If it’s a larger pool of New Yorkers, it’s a more representative pool of New Yorkers,” CUOMO said in an interview with CBS New York on Wednesday.

“New York City has around 5 million voters. New York City has around 8 million votes and around 1 million votes in the Democratic primary, so it’s not necessarily representative of the city,” the former governor said.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo spoke to Primary Eve on June 23, 2025 to a large number of union supporters in the race for the Democratic mayor of New York.

And polls from consulting and lobbying groups that were side by side with outside groups that support Cuomo announced the vote Thursday. This suggests that Mamdani and Cuomo were linked to the possibility of a general election match.

Swawa, founder of the Volunteer Crime-Fighting Patrol, known as the Guardian Angels, competed in his second consecutive election cycle. Additionally, the person running as an independent in November this year is former federal prosecutor Jim Walden.

“I think that in the end, everyone has a room,” Mamdani said in an interview with New York’s Fox News affiliate WNYW on Thursday.

Cuomo, 67, fought to clear his name after 11 sexual harassment accusations over the past four years. He was also under investigation to handle the Covid-19 pandemic amid allegations that his administration has kept a modest and modest COVID-related death in state nursing homes.

Last month, the Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into Cuomo after accusing Republicans of lying to Congress about decisions they made as governor during the coronavirus pandemic.

Cuomo was at the forefront of polls even before he announced his candidacy earlier this year, thanks to his recognition of his name. However, he ran a secure campaign that relied on union support and often avoided engaging with local or national media.

Meanwhile, Mamdani wisely used social media platforms, including Tiktok, and engaged in key voters. He proposed eliminating fares for taking New York City’s vast bus system, creating rent to freeze Cuny (City University in New York) into “tuition-free” city homes, providing “free childcare” for children up to five years old, and establishing a government-run grocery store.

Adams officially launched the campaign on the city hall stairs on Thursday, saying, “This is a city that is not socialist.”

“There is no dignity in giving someone everything free. There is dignity in giving work, so you can provide the right opportunity for your family and you. This is not a handout. This will reach for you.”

Adams’ polls sank before he was charged with five counts last year. This denounced the mayor of bribery and fraud as part of a “long-term” scheme to personally benefit from contact with foreigners.

The mayor repeatedly overtured President Donald Trump, and the Justice Department dismissed the corruption charges earlier this year, so Adams could work with the Trump administration in oppression of illegal immigration.

He announced in early April that he would run for reelection as an independent and abandon the Democratic primary.
