Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is planning to run as an independent in the New York City mayoral election after a double-digit defeat to Democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani in the recent Democratic primary.
Cuomo’s expected run, reported by his brother Chris, anchor News Nation, hugged him this year against incumbent mayor Eric Adams, who switched to this year’s run as 33-year-old Congressman Mamdani and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo is hoping to vow to drop out of all candidates who have not led the mayoral race by mid-September, News Nation reported.
A spokesman for Andrew Cuomo said there will be an official announcement soon.
Cuomo remained on the vote as independent after the primary, but left open questions about whether he was actively planning a campaign.
“I want to look at all the numbers when they’re in and analyze the rank choice vote,” Cuomo said as the main ones approached the end. “I’m already entitled to run for mayor on the independent line in November, so I’ll talk with my colleagues about what the best path I can do to help New York City.”

Mamdani’s upset victory puts Democrats in a volatile position to gather behind candidates who have promoted controversial positions, including raising income taxes on city top-whaiters, setting up government-run grocery stores and using public funds to make childcare universal.

Mamdani, a Muslim, is also scrutinizing his fierce opposition to Israel, the important US Middle Eastern alliance. Cuomo left the Mamdani during the primary race by defending Israel and gaining support from pro-Israel donors.
Mamdani was supported by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of Dn.Y. and recently secured support from Rep. Dn.Y. Adriano Espaillat, an influential Dominican American in the city. The mayoral candidate also courts the Labour Party and teacher unions in New York, some of which have shown support for him.

In three polls conducted over the past two weeks, Cuomo has Mamdami and Republican candidates Curtis Sliwa and Adams track the trays in the third and fourth close races.
Cuomo served three terms as governor of New York, but his scandal-stricken tenure included many sexual harassment claims and forced him to step down in 2021. He also faced criticism from Republicans who allegedly failed information about his Covid-19 death in his state.
