Tributes poured in from all five living presidents Sunday after news broke that former President Jimmy Carter had died at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia.

Carter served as the 39th president of the United States, but he was also a peanut farmer with a vision for a “competent and compassionate” government that propelled him to the White House.

Former President Bill Clinton said in a statement Sunday that he and first lady Hillary met with Mr. Carter in 1975 as “proud early supporters” of his presidential campaign.

“Hillary and I mourn the loss of President Jimmy Carter and thank him for his long and good life,” Clinton wrote. “President Carter was guided by his faith and lived to the end to serve others.”

Mr. Carter’s dedicated efforts since taking office were also praised by Mr. Clinton, including the work of the Carter Center to support fair elections, promote peace, and fight disease.

“I remain proud to have awarded him and Rosalyn the Medal of Freedom in 1999 and to have worked with him in the years after he left the White House,” Clinton wrote. “Our prayers are with Jack, Chip, Jeff, Amy and their families.”

Because as deeply as he believed in anything else, Jimmy Carter believed that we are all made in the image of God.” “I believed that he was created by God,” he added. “Every time I had the opportunity to spend time with President Carter, it was clear that he didn’t just profess these values; he embodied them, and in doing so, It taught us all what it means to live a life full of grace: dignity, justice, and service.”

When Carter accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, President Obama said, “God has given us the ability to choose. We can choose to alleviate suffering. We can choose to work together for peace.” “You can choose to do what you want,” he emphasized.

“He made that choice over and over again over 100 years, and the world is a better place,” Obama said.
