Recently exiled members of the DC Council won a seat that was removed five months ago after being charged with accepting cash bribes.
Trayon White is set to regain his vacant seat in February when members of the DC Council voted unanimously to remove him from their first position in the city’s history.
In August 2024, the FBI arrested White after federal authorities accused him of agreeing to accept a $156,000 bribe. His trial is scheduled to begin in January 2026. White denies fraud and pleads not guilty to a federal incident despite apparent video showing him pocketing a cash-powered envelope.

DC Council expels Treyon White following federal bribery charges
A Justice Department statement in August 2024 claims White agreed to accept bribery in exchange for “using his official position in renewal” of the $5.2 million contract.
He had not been convicted of a felony, so White was allowed to run in a special election.
“So we’ve sent a loud and clear message to the DC City Council that Trayon White is here to stay,” White said in a victory speech, according to the Associated Press, known as Race. The outlet added that troubled and exiled council members spoke about his inauguration as one of the resurrection and redemptions.

Now, DC Council members face choices. Will they allow White to regain his seat or effectively ignore the will of the voters in the 8th district and expel him again? White will not take office until the election results are recognized in August, so they still have time to decide. However, according to Axios, the council has the ability to preemptively block white people from taking office due to corruption scandals.

White’s story reflects the controversial story of former DC mayor, Mayor Marion Barry, in one or more ways. Barry is famous for staged a historic political comeback after the FBI caught him with camera smoking crack cocaine.
White is represented by Frederick D. Cook Jr., according to the Associated Press. Additionally, after his two mayoral conditions, Barry served as District 8 of the DC Council, first winning a seat in 2005.
