What you need to know
A state of emergency remains in effect for the city and county of Los Angeles on Friday as destructive fires continue to burn in the region. The red flag warning, which was scheduled to expire Thursday, has been extended until Friday as Santa Ana winds continue to fan the flames. Schools are closed on Friday as air pollution affects areas not directly affected by the fires. Other private schools and other school districts have also closed, and parents are encouraged to check directly with campuses for updates. Officials likened the devastation caused by the Eaton and Palisades fires to a war zone, saying thousands of structures were destroyed. Firefighters may take a break Friday afternoon as winds are expected to subside this afternoon in preparation for a return to action over the weekend. At least 10 people died in the fire, authorities said. That number is expected to rise as investigators gain access to devastated areas.
