Transgender forces have 30-60 days to self-separate from the military after a court order allows the ban on their services to advance. According to a Thursday memo from Defense Secretary Pete Hegses.
“After @Potus’ Scotts victory, the trance will be released on DOD,” Hegses wrote in X along with a video announcing the new deadline.
According to the Pentagon, approximately 1,000 service members have been self-identified as having gender discomfort and begin a voluntary separation process.
Active duty members will have them until June 6th, one month after the court’s ruling, until leaving the military. The reserve will be held until July 7th.

“The Secretary is encouraged to allow the Supreme Court order to maintain the lower court injunction and “enable to implement policies related to military excellence and prioritization.”
“According to the currently recovered policy, service members who have a current diagnosis or history of symptoms consistent with gender discomfort may choose to voluntarily separate,” Hegses said, adding that if they choose not to do so by the deadline, they will “relustrately remove it” if necessary.

The High Court decision was a victory for the White House, despite the judges failing to address the fundamental merits of the lawsuit or the fundamental merits of President Donald Trump’s January 27 executive order from the US military.
The lower court had issued an injunction to the policy. The Trump administration argued that delaying policies could pose a threat to US military preparations.
Trump officials argued that transgender military policies “foster important government interest in military preparation, unit unit cohesion, good order and discipline, and avoid disproportionate costs.”

The executive order signed by Trump in January ordered Hegseth to update health standards to confirm that “preparation and lethality are prioritized” and take action to “end the use of invention and identification-based pronouns within the DOD.”
He says that expressing a “gender identity” that is different from the individual’s gender at birth does not meet military standards.
In 2014, the ban on members of transgender services was lifted under then-President Barack Obama.
According to the Congressional Research Service, between January 1, 2016 and May 14, 2021, DOD reportedly spent about $15 million on providing transgender care (surgical and non-surgical).

The transgender ban is part of the broader push by the new Pentagon leadership to eradicate policies related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
Last month, Hegseth announced that “99.9%” of DEI-related policies had been eliminated by the Department of Defense. He procures the standards for fitness tests and moved the Combat Fitness Test to hold men and women to the same standards.
