Rep. Don Davis, DN.C., recalls visiting an immigration customs facility in Stewart County, Georgia last week, stressing that he is optimistic that there is room for legislative achievements on related policies.

“It was a very transparent visit,” Davis told Fox News Digital in an interview, saying that he also had the opportunity to talk to detainees. “We were able to move around and go to places. I was even able to re-engage with the detainees again.”

“The best word I use was probably one of the senior managers, but it was “busy,” he added.

North Carolina Democrats stressed that despite rapid changes in border and immigration policies in recent months, the legislative sector needs to step up to make changes.

“I believe there are broader steps that need to be acted in Congress, and I believe there is a need to go ahead with comprehensive immigration reform. I definitely think that borders need to be secured as the next step. The number of illegal entries has certainly come down, but again, we can’t stop where we are now.

U.S. customs and border security data shows that since Trump took office, immigrant encounters at the border plummeted in March with just over 7,000 anxiety.

“We have the safest borders in the country’s history. The numbers prove that. President Trump’s policies save lives every day,” border emperor Tom Homan said at a 100-day White House press conference on Monday.

Davis is one of the few districts that supported President Donald Trump in November but elected Democrats to Congress, and is the second term representing parts of eastern North Carolina.

Last June, Davis and three other Democrats called on the Biden administration to tighten border security.

“The order is one step ahead, but our southern borders are still unsafe,” the group said regarding the executive order at the time.

Davis noted that he observed that some detainees were actively experiencing a judicial process that could determine futures that could involve deportation.

“I was able to observe detainees actually undergoing judicial review and hearing,” Davis said.

“So, for me, takeaways, it’s important to prioritize public safety as we see more detainees coming through detention centres. We can’t compromise on public safety, and we still believe we can do that in a way that can follow the constitution.”
