Zohran Mamdani’s democratic socialist allies may be keeping an eye on key challenges for New York City’s Congressional Democrats, including minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, next year.
But senior political adviser Jeffries has promised that anyone trying to drive away the best Democrats in the House of Representatives in next year’s primary will face a “strong and relentless” response.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Uganda-born, Democratic Socialist MP from Queens, sent a political shockwave around the country two weeks ago with a compelling victory over New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates for New York City’s Democratic mayor. And Mamdani took a big step towards becoming New York City’s first Muslim mayor.
In the wake of Mamdani’s major victory last month, the American Democrat Socialists (DSA) emphasized that “the movement is bigger than one of the elections, cities or organizations.”

“We are encouraging all people inspired by the Zohran campaign to join local DSA or YDSA branches and ensure that Zohran and DSA continue to fight to create a future worthy of the nation’s future,” they added in a statement.
Fast forward to today, DSA leaders appear to be running major challengers against Jeffries and other House Democrats in New York City, including Richie Torres, Jerry Nadler, Dan Goldman and Yvette Clark.

Jeffries, who took over longtime House Democrat leader and former speaker Nancy Pelosi two years ago, has been criticized as a moderate and institutional Democrat by several remote leaders in New York City.
“His leadership leaves a vacuum that organizations like the DSA fill, and I think that’s more important now,” Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the New York City Democrat Socialist branch, told CNN.
Democratic Socialist Sen. Jabari Blisport, a district that includes the same area as the Jeffreys House district, claimed in a Fox News statement that the longtime lawmaker is “growing rapidly with a rebellious, growing progressive base within his own district that he should pay more attention to.”

Jeffreys’ political advisor, Democratic strategist Andre Richardson, pointed to a drastic and controversial move by President Donald Trump during the opening months of his second White House job tour, saying “Prime Minister Health Jeffrey is focusing on retrieving homes from the Maga Stretrex, which has just come off the million Americans.”
Richardson also warned in a statement to CNN that if the people on the left are facing major challenges for Jeffries, “our response will be strong and relentless. We will teach them and all of their incumbents a painful lesson on June 23, 2026.”

When asked about potential major challenges in an interview with CNN on Wednesday, Jeffries replied, “I don’t know what these people are talking about.”
And Jeffries said it was “focused on pushing back towards extremism that was unleashed by the American people.”
Jeffries, Gov. Kathy Hawtle, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, and other Democratic-elected officials in New York praise the Mamdani campaign. And they defended him from Trump’s attacks, but for now they’re refraining from supporting the Democratic mayoral candidate.
Mamdani surged to major victories thanks to an energetic campaign focused on affordable prices and high cost of living in New York City.
He wisely used social media platforms, including Tiktok. He proposed eliminating fares for taking New York City’s vast bus system, creating rent to freeze Cuny (City University in New York) into “tuition-free” city homes, providing “free childcare” for children up to five years old, and establishing a government-run grocery store.
Thanks to the efforts of the massive grassroots military, Mamdani came first on top of the leading frontrunner Cuomo, riding a wave of support from younger and progressive voters.

When asked what Mamdani’s victory means to the party, I think it’s clear that voters prioritize a wide range of clean-up changes, not just progressive changes.
And Kaiazzo, a veteran of Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, said one reason for Mamdani’s victory was that he met tirelessly, “there are voters.”
