New York City – Democrat socialist Zoran Mamdani, who enjoys a surge in support from progressive young voters, is a big step closer to becoming the first Muslim mayor of the country’s most populous city.
The Associated Press had not predicted a winner in the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City on Tuesday night, but former governor Andrew Cuomo saw the writing on the wall and told supporters Mamdani “wind” on election night.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assembly member from Queens, originally from Uganda, surpassed the former three-term governor and nine other candidates in a busy major field in an election determined by votes ranked in the election. He is considered the general election in the country’s most populous city in November, and the much blue city.
“Tonight is Mamdani’s night and he put together a great campaign,” Cuomo said Tuesday. “He touched and inspired young people, he made them move, he got them out and voted. He ran a really, really shocking campaign. I called him. I congratulated him. I sincerely praised him for his efforts.”

Cuomo added that Mamdanie “is a really smart and good impact campaign. Tonight is his night. He deserves it. He won.”

The unofficial results of the first round of the vote, which Mamdani was leading Tuesday night, told his supporters that his campaign was “conversation” about how his campaign would proceed to help both Democrats and New York City move forward.
“Now I want to see all the numbers and see them coming and see this ranked choice vote and what the numbers are saying and saying,” Cuomo added.
Following the former governor’s speech, an aide to the Cuomo campaign said that Cuomo has kept the door open for the possibility of running as a third party or independent candidate in November.
“I want to look at all the numbers when they come and analyze the rank choice votes. And since I’m eligible to run for mayor on an independent line in November, I’ll consult with my colleagues on the best path to helping New York City,” Cuomo said in a statement.

The Democratic candidate, presumably serving as Cross India with New York City Director Brad Lander, is a successful attempt to integrate support for Cuomo within a ranked voting style. Mamdani and Lander campaigned together in the weeks leading up to day one.
On Tuesday night, their total total is enough to beat Cuomo as the ranked voting round progresses, according to an unofficial tally from the Election Commission. According to the Associated Press, tally of ranked selections will not begin until July 1st, so it may take some time before the results are confirmed.
Among other things, Mamdani, who proposed to eliminate fares to board New York City’s vast bus system, has recently been boosted after New York City’s “Get tuition fees,” frozen rents in city housing, and “free childcare” up to age five recently won approval from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Following the support of Progressive Rock Star and the most prominent leaders of New York City on the left, a week later was followed by support from Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vermont Sen. Runner-up of the two-time Democratic presidential candidate.
With multiple candidates running left in the primary, support from Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders helped to integrate the progressive voter support behind Mamdani.
When polls were taken, Mamdami surged to second place over the past few months, narrowing the gap with Cuomo.

Cuomo’s campaign in the week of the Primary’s End of Primary criticised Mamdani as “a dangerously inexperienced lawmaker,” and the former governor touted as “controlling the state and managed crises from Covid to Trump.”
“The mayor of New York City is the CEO of one of the world’s largest companies. This is not a beginner’s job,” Cuomo said on the eve of the primary. “This is not work… for practical training. Your life depends on it, so you need someone who knows what you’re doing on the first day.”
Cuomo and his campaign also targeted Mamdani for his controversial and rebellious stance towards Israel.
“We are opposed to the call to globalize Intifadas and declare an open season for Jews. We are opposed to those who praise Hamas terrorists destined to kill Jews,” Cuomo said on the eve of the primary targeting Mamdani.

However, the attack apparently wasn’t enough to discourage New York City voters.
Mamdani is currently heading to the general election in November, where he will face Curtis Swawa, the founder of the Volunteer Anti-Crime Patrol, known as the Guardian Angels. Sliwa is the Republican candidate for mayor in his second election cycle.
Also in the November poll is incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, a medium Democrat elected in 2021. Earlier this year, Adams dropped his major Democrat bid as his approval rating sank to a historic low.

Adams’ polls sank before he was charged with five counts last year. This denounced the mayor of bribery and fraud as part of a “long-term” scheme to personally benefit from contact with foreigners.

The mayor repeatedly overtured Trump, and the Justice Department dismissed corruption charges earlier this year, allowing Adams to work with the Trump administration in cracking down on illegal immigration.
