Democrat socialist Zohran Mamdani concluded his historic, deeply polarizing victory by officially receiving the most votes ever recorded in the New York City mayoral primary.
Three rounds later, Mamdani won 565,639 votes, surpassing the previous record of 547,901 votes held by David N. Dinkins in 1989.
Mamdani celebrated the X milestone, saying, “With the total of the updated RCVs just released by the Election Commission, our campaign officially won the most total votes in the primary in New York City history.”

The far left council member from Queens won 565,639 votes after just three rounds of rank selection votes, defeating former government Andrew Cuomo nearly 13 points, official data confirms. Cuomo finished with 440,655 votes.
The Mamdani campaign quickly seized the numbers and touted the results as “orders” of progressive policies such as a citywide rent freeze, taxpayer-funded childcare, and even “fast and free” public buses.
“The movement created history on election night,” Mamdani said in a statement Tuesday that he “promises to cut costs and fulfill his promise that urban workers can afford it.”
Mamdani officially has won the NYC DEM primary with 12 points against Cuomo, who is currently in the race.

Openly identifying himself as a democratic socialist, Mamdani currently represents Astoria and Long Island City in the New York State Legislature. His two-term records include promoting tenant protection, hiking opposing utility rates, and advocating for mass transport subsidies.
Ranked choice voting was used only for the second time in the NYC mayoral primary. Mamdani secured 56.2% of the vote after three rounds, compared to Cuomo’s 43.8%.
Mayor Eric Adams needed eight rounds in 2021, narrowing 50.4%.
The left-leaning political change in New York City has attracted attention from state and national leaders.
“There was the first thing I thought yesterday was a lot of conversation with the candidate,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul told reporters Tuesday, adding that he discussed the shared affordable goals and concerns from the Jewish community that they “feels under siege.” Hochul said Mamdani “understands the need” to attract those constituencies.

When President Donald Trump called Mamdani the “communist madness” and asked about the true social post from implying that New York could lose funds under the Mamdani administration, Hochul firmly pushed back.
“We are New Yorkers, and we are not threatened by the threats from Washington.
With the general election looming, it is now eyeing whether Cuomo or other central Democrats will face independent challenges.
“President Trump supports Eric Adams. I don’t think socialism is the answer,” Cuomo Campaign spokesman Rich Atzpaldi told Fox News Digital. “Most New Yorkers are not Trumpter, and most are not socialists. The majority are in the middle. We will continue to assess the current situation for the best interests of the people of New York City.”
