In a recent panel of American Democrat Socialists (DSA), leaders discussed how they are working closely with New York City’s Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, and how he positions the organization to “grab the state’s power.”
In a July panel discussion entitled “United Struggle: Resistance to Restricted Body Autonomy,” DSA organizer Daniel Goulden claimed that the organization was closely involved in Mamdani’s campaign and helped him write part of his platform.
The clip was first excavated by Stu Smith at the Manhattan Institute.
“With Zohran, we are basically in the best position possible to seize the power of the states we can be, because we are like this,” Goulden fingers that the campaign and organization are so close.
Goulden went on to suggest that “one of the things that really made Zoran successful in his policy rollout is particularly dependent on DSA.”

Congressman Zohran Mamdani (D-NY), a candidate for mayor of New York, speaks to supporters gathering on June 24, 2025 on election night with Craft LIC Greats.
“DSA meets regularly with him, not to mention the team. His policy director is a friend of mine. I have worked with his campaign manager for over a year. Do you know? I have a friend who is his staff,” he said.
Granden claimed that the DSA will work particularly closely with Mamdani on its “trans rights” platform to use urban resources to provide free transgender treatment to people across the country.
“We wrote the platform with him, and the team was very happy to work with us about this,” he explained. “What we explicitly wanted to do was to use the power of New York City to provide free gender-affirming care, and say it’s free if the insurance company decides to drive us away.
Goulden suggested that New York City could use its resources to not only provide transgender treatment to New Yorkers, but also to people in other cities and states, even if such treatments were illegal.

“There is absolutely no reason why telehealth and mail-order prescriptions cannot be used for people across the country to undermine the national ban,” he said.
“Zoran [Mamdani] The campaign always wanted to work with us. You know, we’re like that,” he said.
According to Mamdani’s campaign website, his administration will move to “make NYC an LGBTQIA+ Sanctuary City” and will dedicate a total of $65 million in urban funds to expand access to “gender affirming care.”
