Social media users are criticizing Democratic senator Pete Hegseth for claiming he would lead a military invasion of Greenland if nominated.
Mr. Hegseth’s confirmation hearing was held by the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, giving lawmakers the opportunity to ask questions about Mr. Trump’s defense nomination. One Democrat in particular, Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, came under fire on social media for asking Hegseth whether to invade Greenland or seize the Panama Canal.
“Trump never backs down strategically. I would never publicly state that I would in any way direct the president’s orders,” Hegseth said in response to a question.
“Hirono was playing judge, jury, and executioner based on lies and stupidity,” wrote Rep. Nancy Mace, R.S.C., in a post about X.

“Maisie Hirono may be the least intelligent member of Congress, but that’s saying something,” wrote Bridget Gabriel, founder and president of ACT for America.
“This line of questioning is inappropriate for her position as a United States senator,” Gabrielle said on TV’s “X,” adding, “I support Pete Hegseth.”
Hegseth was an “incredibly talented and battle-proven leader,” military review says.
Hirono claimed during the hearing that President-elect Trump ordered security guards to “shoot demonstrators in the legs” during a 2020 protest in Washington, D.C.’s Layfayette Square, and Hegseth asked whether he would carry out such an order.

Mr. Hegseth responded, “I was in the D.C. National Guard unit that was in Lafayette Square during those events and carried a riot shield on behalf of my country.” “I saw 50 Secret Service agents injured by rioters.”
Mr. Hirono also asked Mr. Hegseth about sexual assault allegations and allegations that he had been drinking on the job, both of which he repeatedly denied.
