To hear Republicans communicate that, California is a failed state, and Donald Trump wins presidency on the landslide, giving him the obligation he willing to do. There’s no surprise.
But increasingly, Democrats are reflecting those topics. Since Kamala Harris lost the election, Democrats have been on a national self-war tour. One after the other, their leaders thrust their heads deep inside their heads, hoping to find out why so many Americans, especially young people, black voters and Latinos, avoided the former vice president.
Even in California, and certainly a blue nation, the quest for the soul was extreme, as seen in the state Democratic treaty last weekend.
Is it introspective for a long time, or is it just annoying self-compassion? Columnists Anita Chhabria and Mark Z. Barabak have it.
Chhabria: Mark, you were in the Anaheim tournament. thought?
BARABAK: Please note that this was the first convention I attended and the first convention rated as an “R” in adult language. Apparently, Democrats believe that dropping many F-bombs will help voters show their credibility and passion. But it seemed like a kind of eloquence and after a while it became troublesome.
I have covered Nancy Pelosi for over 30 years and have never heard her publicly or privately. I don’t remember Martin Luther King Jr. [expletive deleted] dream. “Both were pretty effective leaders.
The Democrats have a lot to do. But cursing a blue streak won’t beat the White House or Congress’ control.
Chabria: As someone known to cast curses on a daily basis in a polite society, I am not a person who judges me. But that cashing and fuss brings a bigger point. Democrats are desperate to prove how serious and passionate they are about fixing themselves. Gov. Gavin Newsom calls democratic brands “Toxic.” Walz told his fellow Demus:
One thing Democrats can agree on across the country is that they are lame. Or at least they see themselves as crippling. I don’t know if the average person is finding a very uncomfortable democratic ideal, especially since Trump and his Magazine Brigade advance the promises of many campaigns.
I always tell my kids to be my heroes and I’m beginning to think Democrats need to hear that. Pick up yourself. Dust off. move on. Do you think all of this self-deprivation is useful? Does Harris’ loss mean that the party is disappointed with the value and value?
Barabak: I think self-reflection is a good thing for the party. Democrats suffered soul-crushing losses at the presidential level and the Senate in November, with the GOP seized control. Not understanding why is it a political malpractice.
That being said, we tend to go overboard and overinterpret the long-term importance of a single election.
This is not the end of the Democrats. It is not the first time one of two major political parties has been thrown into the political wilderness.
Democrats experienced similar soul explorations after the loss of the president in 1984 and 1988. In 1991, a book was published explaining the Democrats were destined to lose the White House again, suggesting they would do so for a foreseeable future. In November 1992, Bill Clinton was elected president. Four years later, he moved to reelection.
In 2013, after losing two consecutive presidential campaigns, Republicans commissioned a political autopsy that urged the party to increase outreach to gay and Latino voters, among other recommendations. In 2016, Donald Trump is not exactly an inclusion model – was selected.

So, certainly look inside. But don’t spare existential freakouts.
Chabria: I also argue that this moment is more than the next election. I think there are doubts as to whether democracy will make it that long. If so, it’s about whether the next round of votes will be free and fair.
I know that all prices continue to rise, and traditional wisdom is that it’s all about the economy. But it appears that Democrats remain in electoral politics as usual. But these are rare times when we need something. There are many people who don’t want to see their neighbors, family or friends getting caught up in masks or customs enforcement. Many people who don’t want to see Medicaid cuts in millions are likely to see Medicare next in the chopping block. Many people who fear that our courts will not hold the line until mid-term.
They want to know that Democrats are fighting to protect these things. I agree that losses should be followed by introspection. But there is a hunger for leadership against this administration, and Democrats have lost the opportunity to become those leaders with their endless self-imagining.
Has Harris really lost that bad thing? Has Trump really been delegated to end America as we know?
Barabak: No, no.
In other words, losses are losses. Trump swept all seven battlefield states, and unlike 2000, for example, the election results were beyond controversy.
However, Trump’s margin against Harris in the popularity poll was only 1.5% (far from landslide territory), and he didn’t win much of his support and fell by 50% shyness.
As for the assumed mission, the most despicable and perceptual post-election analysis I have read came from Yuval Levin of the Enterprise Institute in America.
Challengers “win the election because opponents aren’t popular,” Levin wrote.
2026 is a long way to go, and even longer until 2028.
But Levin certainly looks smart.
Chabria: I know Kamalabashing is popular now, but Harris claims it’s not popular that resonates.
Harris was on the campaign for 107 days. Many candidates run for the White House for years and count “maybe” periods much longer. She is unknown to most Americans, faces double discrimination from race and gender, and is not considered violently charismatic (to put it in fairness). It is therefore worth noting that general votes are roughly split across all of the packages.
But maybe Elon Musk said that best. As part of a troublesome farewell with Trump, the billionaire tweeted, “Without me, I’d lose the election, Dem would take over the House, and Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.”
Sometimes there is a truth in anger. The money for the mask had an impact on this election, and perhaps leaned it to Trump in at least one battlefield state. After death, you need to look at the media as well as the message. Is that what Democrats say is not resonating, or is the right-wing oligarchs dominating communication?

With respect to Marshall McCulhan, I think Democrats are first needed to grasp the message to carry them through mid-term 2026. They pushed back in 2018 the Affordable Care Act, or GOP’s efforts to dismantle Obamacare, if you wish. If Republicans take the meat shaft to Medicare and millions of Americans lose medical compensation, it’s not hard to see them revive that playbook.
Then came in 2028, they chose presidential candidates and have messengers. They can focus on media that is political for now, such as television, radio, podcasts, tiktok, and bruski.
