Democrats have criticized Israel’s first airstrike in the Tehran capital on Thursday night, reverberating in the Israeli-Iran conflict.

Israel launched Operation Raisinglion, which targets Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure, and Iran responded with a strike in Tel Aviv, causing at least five people to be injured.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued a statement on Friday calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “an extremist.”

Will the US be targeted as Iran retaliates against Israel?

“The world is more dangerous and unstable as a result of the radical Netanyahu government’s continued international law,” Sanders writes. “Firstly, he uses the starvation of Gaza children as a tool for war, a wild violation of Geneva’s practices. Now, his illegal, one-sided assault on Iran is putting a full-scale regional war at stake.”

Sanders added that he “directly violated” the US interests that “directly violated” the resolution of years of tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.

“A speech was planned on Sunday, but Netanyahu chose to launch an attack instead,” writes Sanders. “The United States must make it clear that we will not be dragged into another Netanyahu war. We should work together with the international community to do everything possible to prevent this conflict from escalating and bring the parties fighting to the negotiation table.”

Senate diplomacy member Christopher S. Murphy, D-Conn. was caught up in social media on Friday morning.

“Netanyahu was not trying to help with diplomacy. He was trying to destroy it,” Murphy wrote. “How do you know? They reportedly targeted and killed major Iranian negotiators with Trump.”

Global call to avoid escalation pouring after Israel strikes Iran

D-Va also works for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Tim Kane added that he doesn’t understand why Israel will launch a preemptive attack this weekend when a meeting between the US and Iran is scheduled.

Senator Jack Reid, a ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said military attacks were “never an answer.”

“The surprising decision by Israel to launch an airstrike in Iran is a reckless escalation that risks igniting regional violence,” writes Reid. “These strikes threaten not only the lives of innocent civilians, but also the stability of the Middle East as well as the security of American citizens and the military. While tensions between Israel and Iran are realistic and complicated, military attacks of this magnitude are by no means the answer.”

Trump faces critical decisions as a Middle Eastern teaser on the brink of war

By Friday afternoon, it appears that some Democrats have changed their songs in response to the fight back.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif) condemned Iran’s reaction and called it “co-disease.”

“The Israeli strike against ##iran accurately targeted the senior Iranian military commanders and military locations that pose an existential threat to Israel,” Sherman wrote. “The Islamic Republic’s response is to targeting private centres at #Telaviv.

Others avoided all the conversation together.

“This is a rapidly evolving situation and it is important for the US to work with our allies to avoid any steps that will cause further escalation throughout the region,” says D-Va. “For years, Iran has threatened the security of Israel and its region. Israel has an undeniable right to protect itself and its citizens.”
