President Donald Trump’s “liberation day” tariffs imposed a 10% baseline on all imports – a pushback from a Democrat governor at a sharp rate in the country with a trade deficit, seeking to protect the state from any fallout.
The Trump administration has argued that aggressive new tariffs will ultimately strengthen the US economy and protect American workers, but Trump’s new tariff orders have impacted global markets as Democratic governors unite in opposition.
government. Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Josh Shapiro, Jared Polis, Tim Walz and Kathy Hochul are one of the list of Democratic governors speaking out against Trump’s tariffs.
“Democrats should focus on out-of-control homelessness, crime, regulation and affordability in the blue state, rather than challenging international deals,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement in Fox News Digital.

Considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, Newsom has announced plans to seek a “strategic” international partnership to exclude California from retaliatory tariffs imposed by countries that have been caught in crossing Trump’s tariffs.

“I pursue business relationships with global partners to combat the pain of Trump’s tariffs and to remove products made in California from retaliation. As the world’s largest economy, California remains open for business.
However, within the US Constitution, trade policy is a power reserved by the federal government, and states do not have the legal power to negotiate independently with foreign governments on tariffs or enter into world trade agreements.
Another potential 2028 presidential candidate who refused Trump’s second term in all executive orders, Pritzker, delegated a delegation of Illinois legislators to Mexico last week and signed an agreement to strengthen economic cooperation with the city of Mexico.

As Pretzker had secured independent economic ties on his “trade mission” to Mexico, he denounced Trump’s tariffs as “tax” on Americans.
“Donald Trump might want to call this a ‘liberation day,’ but nothing is liberating for working families who are dealing with the high costs of food, housing and utility,” Pretzker said. “Tax is a tax. They are taxes on working families, taxes on food, and other daily necessities.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro will speak at the Democratic National Convention held at the United Center in Chicago on August 19, 2024.
Shapiro, who was taking the Vice Presidential candidate list for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, also likened the new tariff to “taxes,” repeatedly causing a negative impact on Pennsylvania families.
“The reality is that Donald Trump’s economic policies make things difficult for the good people in Pennsylvania,” Shapiro said in an interview with MSNBC.
The Democratic governor continued to build up criticism of the “liberation day” of the broadcast wave over the weekend.
Former vice presidential candidate Tim Waltz said in an interview with MSNBC that Trump “has a fundamental understanding of how trade works.”
“This is a tax on workers,” Waltz added.

Hochul, who has been modest to the Trump administration on abortion and immigration, said in an interview that Trump’s tariffs are “the biggest tax increase in American history,” claiming that “it is not liberating and “harms real people in our state and across this country.”
“This is one of the biggest tax payments in American history. It’s not a day of liberation, it’s a day of recession,” Colorado Gov. Jared Police added to Bloomberg this weekend.
Trump has been defending his tariffs since “The Day of Liberation.”

“The United States has the opportunity to do what should have been done decades ago,” Trump said Monday in The Society of Truth. “Don’t be weak! Don’t be stupid! Don’t be panicans (a new party based on weak and stupid people!). Strong, courageous, patient, and greatness will result!”
Despite the panic and uncertainty in the market after the implementation of his tariffs, Trump reiterated, “One day we will recognize that tariffs are very beautiful for the United States!”
