On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security offered a bounty period for drivers who have not yet applied for their actual ID, driver licenses or identification cards.
At the initial deadline on Wednesday, domestic air travelers will need to use their actual ID, passport or other TSA accessible ID, but the Department of Homeland Security said people can fly domestically on their regular driver’s licenses for a while. However, TSA agents may remove them from the line without an actual ID for additional scrutiny.
It is not clear how long the grace period will be valid.
Travelers are advised that the TSA check-in process will be lengthy for those with regular driver’s licenses due to additional questions.
Prior to Wednesday’s deadline, DMVs across Southern California were extremely crowded with last-minute applicants.
“I’m going to have a family reunion in Oklahoma in three weeks, so I suddenly said, ‘Oh, no!”
Jude Bakiunawa has submitted his application in time to meet the pending deadline.
“It’s never too late,” he said.
Actual IDs that meet federal security standards are also accepted when seeking access to federal buildings and facilities, such as military bases.
