A former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office recruit was arrested this month on suspicion of assaulting a firearm, the department said Wednesday.
As first reported by NBC Los Angeles, 36-year-old Kiwan Newbel was fired a day after allegedly threatening a man with a handgun.
Following the felony arrest on March 10, prison records show Newbel was taken into custody at the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station. He was released the following day after posting $30,000 in bonds, records show.
It is not clear if he has an attorney, and Newbel could not immediately contact him for comment.
“The Sheriff’s division holds all staff, including recruits, to the highest standards of action and professionalism,” the department said in a statement. “This incident does not reflect the values our personnel support. We do not allow the actions of one individual to undermine their reputation or undermine the great work done daily by dedicated men and women in this department.”
The incident occurred on March 2, when Century Sheriff’s lawmakers responded to a call on the attack in Lynnwood.
“After further investigation, the detectives obtained information to recruit them at the Sheriff’s Department’s academy,” the department’s statement said.
Two law enforcement agencies that demanded anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the case told the Times they used the suspect’s license plate to identify him to investigate lawmakers.
According to one source, investigators said they only realized he was a recruit after the phone tracing revealed repeated visits to the department’s training academy.
Nine days after the incident, the department’s Internal Criminal Investigation Bureau (a unit investigating crimes that could involve department employees took over the lawsuit and arrested Newbell, officials said.
He is scheduled to return to court on April 9th.
