Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made a special request to New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo after he joked that if a former Democratic governor loses to socialist Zoran Mamdani, he would move to the state of the Sun.

Cuomo’s jokes seemed to raise alarms for many who went to social media to express their dislike of ideas. Republican DeSantis was one of those who raised concerns in response to an article about Cuomo, which considers changes in the landscape if he was defeated by Mamdani again.

“Don’t make Florida a New York!” Desantis posted on X.

Desantis predicts that Palm Beach’s asset value will “surge” from New Yorkers if democratic socialist candidate Mamdani wins the mayoral race in New York City this November. Speaking just before the June primary, DeSantis said, “If this socialist mayoral candidate wins in New York City, people will be out of that city and we will see the value of the property surges in Palm Beach.”

Cuomo appeared to be joking when he said he was moving to Florida on Saturday.

The former New York governor lost to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, but plans to challenge him as an independent in the general election. The line, delivered with political insiders at Hamptons breakfast, sparked laughter, but also highlighted growing anxiety over the city’s political direction.

According to attendees at the event, “That’s all.

The statement came during a private gathering hosted by businessman John Catsimatidis at 75 Main in Southampton. Catsimatidis, a GOP donor and radio host, is also the owner of the Gristedes and D’Agostino supermarket chains, and could be directly affected by Mamdani’s proposal to create a government-run grocery store.

Poll: Mamdani is The Frontrunner, but hasn’t run away in the NYC mayoral race yet

The guest list included Ambassador George Tunnis and former Top Cuomo aide Melissa Delosa. One participant described the line as an “amazing” moment. Several guests said they attracted attention in the room.

Rich Azzopardi, senior adviser to Cuomo, defended his comments to the New York Post.

“Governor Cuomo will never give up on New York,” he said. “This election led the city, highlighting the interests of this election and the risk of electing a dangerously inexperienced, hatred-spewing 33-year-old socialist.”

A small number of polls conducted in New York City this month suggest that Mamdani is at the forefront, but he is far from getting away in the race. The study shows mum ticks ahead of Cuomo, from about 15 to just 3 points.

Mamdani and Cuomo in the survey are Mayor Eric Adams, who announced earlier this year that incumbent Eric Adams and Guardian Angels co-founder Curtis Swawa, the Republican mayor nominees, are the second consecutive stock elections.
