Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday that the state has been trying to give back during the Biden administration over $878 million to the federal government.
Desantis’ office has notified the US Treasury that $878,112,000 will be returned to the federal government.
The governor said the move came after a meeting with newly formed government efficiency, or with billionaire Elon Musk and his team.
“For years, Florida has been trying to return federal funds to the federal government for the ideological strings attached by the Biden administration, but they have not even understood how to accept it,” DeSantis wrote to X on Friday.

“Today I met @Elonmusk and the Doge team. I accomplished this on the same day,” he continued.

The governor’s office said in an email to the Treasury Department it would search for additional excess federal funds that could be returned.
“Following today’s meeting with Elon Musk, at Governor DeSantis’ direction, Florida is officially returning $878,112,000 in taxpayer dollars to the federal government as part of Doge’s efforts,” the email said. “We will also continue to identify other unused or surplus federal funds granted to Florida to determine whether further refunds are possible. We hope that our actions will serve as a model other states should follow.”

Musk, who also serves as a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, responded to the governor’s post on X.
“I’ve saved almost $10 in your taxpayer’s money,” Musk said on his social media platform.
Last month, Desantis announced the creation of Florida’s Doge Task Force, which will “eliminate waste within the state government, save taxpayers money, and ensure accountability in Florida.”

“Florida has set financially conservative governance standards, and our new Florida Dozi Task Force will do more to serve the people of Florida,” DeSantis said at the time. “It eliminates redundant committees and fees, reviews the operations and spending of state universities and universities, uses artificial intelligence to further investigate state agencies to uncover hidden waste, audit the spending habits of local organizations, and even shed light on waste and bloat.”
