The Department of Homeland Security defended the agent on Wednesday after D-Ill Sen. Dick Durbin said he was being diverted to target dangerous criminals and then cut down illegal immigrants like gardeners.
Durbin, a ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, spoke at a hearing entitled “Beyond Smash and Grab: Criminal Networks and Organized Theft,” when he focused on the various roles federal law enforcement plays in the fight against organized crime and organized retail theft, particularly Homeland Security Investigation (HSI).

“But I acknowledge that this administration has announced different priorities,” he said. “Under this administration, HSI has been diverted to round-up immigration, many of which pose no threat to this country.”
In a post on X, DHS said Durbin’s own Illinois state is providing sanctuary for criminal illegal immigrants.
“The brave men and women from HSI, whose Durbin attacks have the worst and worst on our streets, Post said: “The senators should be grateful to them, not attacking them.”
The DHS Post said that comments like the ones made by the senators have contributed to an increase in attacks on U.S. immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) staff by more than 830%, which is the daily life to arrest illegal foreigners who are violently criminalized to protect and protect the lives of American citizens.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a White House spokesperson said immigrant security is national security.

“But the president can walk and chew gum at the same time. He holds all criminals accountable, whether illegal aliens or American citizens. That’s why the national murder rate has plummeted. Fugs from the FBI’s most wanted list can work under the Biden administration’s soft crime regime.
Durbin cited a report that said HSI agents had moved from the new case for the arrest of immigration enforcement.
“One veteran agent said, “There’s no drug cases, no human trafficking, no child exploitation.” Instead, he said he was infuriated, saying the HSI was “arrest the gardener.” These are not actions of the administration that take the fight against crime seriously,” Durbin concluded. “It will risk Americans who divert federal resources and remain low in their ability to target and disrupt criminals like organized retail theft.”
