The US Department of Homeland Security said Monday it is investigating the California Cash Assistance Program for California Immigrants (CAPI) to allegedly provide benefits to the US illegal immigrants.
The Title 8 subpoena issued by the Homeland Security Survey (HSI) requires records to be made public from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Welfare (DPSS), the agency administering the state program.
According to the official CAPI website, the program is “designed to be designed solely for immigrant status to non-citizens, blinds and disabled people who are not eligible for supplemental security income/state supplemental payments (SSI/SSP).”
However, DHS is “trying to determine whether an unqualified illegal alien has received supplemental security income (SSI) from the Social Security Administration between January 2021 and the present,” the statement said. The subpoena focuses on Los Angeles County, but the department said in a statement that “it’s just the beginning.”
It was not immediately clear whether the scope of the survey would be extended to other communities.
Some of the documents that DPSS must submit include:
The applicant’s name and date of birth. Copy of the application. Immigration status. Evidence of SSI ineligibility from the Social Security Agency. Affidavits supporting the application.
DHS director Kristi Noem is known for her TV commercials urging people to self-report, saying in a statement:
