A group of dirt bike riders evaded police pursuit Thursday in eastern Los Angeles County by performing stunts on the road and waving at news helicopters, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol responded to a report of several motorcycles and dirt bikes racing on westbound I-60 at Rosemead Boulevard near South El Monte at 3:52 p.m. When authorities attempted to stop the racers, the two drivers fled, leading to a pursuit on various roads and highways, according to the CHP.
Police said the riders, a young man and a teenager wearing hoodies, were traveling the wrong way on the 710 Freeway at “various speeds,” the CHP said, but the press release did not specify specific speeds. No mention of speed.
The announcement also did not mention a group of about 20 motorists who joined the fleeing riders on motorcycles and four-wheelers, who were captured by a KTLA news helicopter during the chase.
Riders greeted each other with fist bumps, did wheelies and street stunts while waving at news helicopters overhead and getting dangerously close to other drivers with police in tow. At one point, the group stopped at a gas station to refuel, according to KTLA.
Police eventually called off the pursuit, and a police helicopter left behind to monitor was “unable to continue the pursuit.” No arrests were made.
