Disney and Universal filed a lawsuit Wednesday suing AI company Midjourney for copyright infringement. It was filed in the Central District of the US District Court, Central District of California.
This is the first time two major Hollywood studios have brought an intellectual property theft case to court through artificial intelligence.
The two Entertainment Titans say Midi Joanie is selling images that “blatantly incorporate and copy famous Disney and Universal characters,” including Star Wars, Shrek, Simpsons, Frozen, Frozen, The Little Mermaid and The Despicable Me.

Both Disney and Universal allegedly asked Midi Joanie to stop this and take the technical measures implemented at least by other AI services.” However, the company says the Mid Journey is “focused on its own revenue and ignores the plaintiff’s demands.”
The lawsuit stated that Midjourney had secured $300 million subscribers last year.
“Instead of stopping the infringement, Midjourney continues to release new versions of its imaging service, which has even higher quality infringing images, according to Midjourney’s founder and CEO,” the lawsuit states.
Both Disney and Universal are demanding a ju trial. They called the San Francisco-based company “a bottomless hole of typical copyrightless riders and plagiarism.”

“Copyright infringement is copyright infringement and whether or not an image or video is being created that is being infringed by AI or another technology does not infringe it,” the lawsuit said. “Midjourney’s actions are threatening to misuse Disney and Universal’s intellectual property and overturn the bedrock incentives of US copyright law that drive American leadership in film, television and other creative arts.”
KTLA 5 contacted Midjourney for a statement on this but did not receive a response.
