Between the panels, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Dotter and Walt Disney Imagineer Michael Handgen revealed details about the attraction’s unique ride system.
“Because of the appeal of this car, we need to invent a new type of vehicle,” says Hundgen. “No one builds these in the factory because you have to do more than bring you from one place to another. You have to make a car that conveys the feeling when you get there.”

Imagineer visited the Arizona Desert for research and tested real off-road vehicles to replicate the feeling of driving on rocky terrain. The team partnered with a motocross company to build a dirt truck to collect data on vehicle movements.
Docter shared an early concept sketch, revealing that each ride vehicle has a clear name and number that resembles a real race car.
