A search and rescue mission is underway in Lake Castaic Lake, where two kayakers turned over Sunday afternoon.
One of the kayakers, a woman, was rescued without being injured. The other person is still missing and is presumed to own death, according to LA County Fire Chief Sheila Kellyher.
The incident occurred on the first day of a three-month summer period that says drowsing in the state Spike.
The fire station arrived just before 1pm, answering a call about a kayak accident. At the time of publication, divers were still searching for the middle of the lake.
The identities of the two kayakers are currently unavailable. Kelly was unable to confirm whether any of the kayakers were wearing a life jacket, but according to the Santa Clarita Valley Signal, which cited radio dispatch traffic, the rescued kayaker was wearing a life jacket, and the missing kayaker was not.
Located in the Sierra Perona Mountains in northwestern LA County, Lake Castitic serves as Southern California’s largest state project reservoir.
According to the state Water Safety Coalition, around 400 Californians own and die each year, with half of all occurring in the summer months of June, July and August. Parks officials are urging everyone on canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards or other human-equipped ships to use life jackets.
