Less than a month has passed that travelers must display their actual ID before boarding commercial flights in the US, DMV offices in 18 states will open an hour earlier, four days in advance per week, to serve reservation-only customers in search of federal-mandated cards.
This includes eight DMV offices in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The county is open at 7am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays rather than 7am, dedicating early hours solely to patrons with actual ID appointments.
On Wednesdays, DMV office hours at participating locations are 9am to 5pm
The Federal Real ID Act comes into effect on May 7th, with cards also required to enter federal buildings and military facilities.
Compliance with the law passed in 2005 as part of its response to the 9/11 attacks has been delayed many times since the original deadline in 2008.
But now the deadline is nearing, and ahead of the spring summer holiday season, many people are rushing to get what essentially becomes an improved driver’s license.
“We look forward to serving Californians this spring and early summer,” said Steve Gordon, the state’s DMV director. “These additional appointments make it easier than ever to obtain your actual ID.”
Information about the documentation needed to obtain the actual ID is available at dmv.ca.gov.
