Social media users are warned not to fall into fake online ads offering registration renewal services at discounted prices, as they are spoofing the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Residents are reporting to be watching deceptive social media ads claiming to renew their vehicle registrations at a 50% discount, the DMV said Wednesday.
Fact check: State law prohibits DMVs from offering discounted vehicle registration renewals.
Deceptive ads will ask for personal information such as your full name, license plate number, and the last five digits of your vehicle registration number.
To take advantage of the expected services, you will be required to pay through the Peer-to-Peer Transaction Services Cash app.
Fact check: DMV does not request personal information or payments through informal channels such as social media sites or transactional applications.
To pay the Department of State for renewing your vehicle registration, you can:
“The safest way to renew your vehicle registration is through the official DMV website,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said in a statement.
