National Intelligence Director Tarsi Gabbard has announced the release of more than 230,000 files related to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in response to an executive order from President Donald Trump.

“Americans have been waiting nearly 60 years to see the full scope of the federal investigation into the assassination of Dr. King,” Gabbard said. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we ensure that Stone does not rely on its mission to provide complete transparency about this pivotal and tragic event in our country’s history.

The file has been released to President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy as part of Trump’s commitment to releasing previously classified documents related to King.

The most recent batch of files contains details about the investigation carried out by the FBI in assassination of King.

National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard announced the release of more than 230,000 files on the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on July 21, 2025.

Some documents relate to discussions of potential leads, internal FBI memos on the progress of the case, and those relating to James Earl Ray’s former cellmate.

Additionally, the release has diplomatic evidence from the Canadian police regarding Ray fleeing the country after King’s assassination.

“The American people deserve the answer decades after the horrific assassination of one of our country’s great leaders,” Attorney General Pamela Bondy said. “The Justice Department is proud to partner with directors Gabbard and Odni at the direction of President Trump for this latest disclosure.”

King’s children, Bernice and Martin Luther King III, issued a statement Monday after they had previously opposed the release of the document.

“We recognize that the release of documents relating to the assassination of his father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has long been an interesting subject and has captivated public curiosity for decades,” the statement reads about X. 57 years. We ask that you do so by being involved in the release of these files and respect the continued grief of our families. ”

Gabbard announced in April that documents related to the 1968 assassination of RFK and MLK will be released in the coming days, noting that more than 100 people are “working 24 hours a day” to scan documents related to both the murder and subsequent investigations.

She told Trump at a cabinet meeting held at the White House in April that documents had been kept for decades and had never been scanned or seen before.

Upon taking office, Trump issued an executive order outside his Tennessee hotel room on the second floor in Memphis to declassify files relating to the assassination of King, a civil rights icon, who was shot on April 4, 1968.
