Pentagon spokesman John Ulley lobbed a shot of Mark Millie, former chairman of joint chief Mark Millie.
“Unfortunately, in recent years, the US military’s high standards of body composition and other metrics on body composition and other metrics have set a bad example from the top through his own personal organization. Secretary Hegses promises a high standard of restoration.
The Pentagon revoked Millie’s security details and clearance in late January.
The review comes after the secretary expressed concern that fitness standards had been eroded, and questioned whether the criteria for discrepancies for men and women had an impact on preparation.

This directs defense secretaries to “existing standards set by the military department related to physical fitness, body composition and grooming” as they are ready with staff.
This memo directs the review to look at how standards have changed since 2015.
“Our troops aren’t fat – our troops look sharp – not sloppy, we only want quality – not quotas, not quotas.”

“It’ll be part of the first things we do with the pentagon – we’re reviewing it in a gender-neutral way. There’s a standard that ensures that preparation and meritocracy are the forefront and center,” Hegses promised in January.
In December 2015, the military held all combat roles to women. In an interview with a podcast just before he was taken away as secretary, Hegses said the US should “not have women in combat roles.” However, at his confirmation hearing, he revealed that in his role in ground combat, women must meet the same standards as men.
The DOGE’s initial findings on DEI spending in the Department of Defense save $80 million, according to the agency.
“Whether it’s male or female, they have to meet the same high standards,” he said. “In places where those things have been eroded, or where courses and standards have been changed to meet quotas. That’s the type of review I’m talking about. It’s not whether women have access to ground combat.”
This review could lead to changes to the Army Combat Fitness Test, which are currently being scored with age and gender specific requirements. This became the Army Standard Fitness Test in 2023 after decades of physical fitness tests that imposed the same standards on men and women.
In the current test, men aged 17-21 need to drive two miles in 22 minutes, while women of the same age need to do that in 23 minutes 22 seconds.

Service branches have begun creating accommodation for recruits who have not met fitness standards in recent years as a way to deal with the recruitment crisis. The Army and Navy provided pre-boot camping training to those who did not meet physical fitness or test scores. However, these recruits had to meet the same criteria to graduate and serve from the training course.
“When I was in the Army, we drove out good soldiers because we tattooed naked women in their arms, and today we relax the standards of shaving, dreadlocks, guys panting and straight obesity.”

“Fragmentally, the standards had to go… for fairness,” he added.
Service branches began allowing the military to sport different hairstyles for female service members who claimed that mostly certain tight and low breads lead to hair removal. In recent years, the Army began allowing cornrows and twists after claiming that hairstyles were cheaper and easier to maintain.
