New York City Director and mayoral candidate Brad Lander were taken into custody Tuesday by immigration and customs enforcement agents as he escorts the defendant from immigration court, his wife said in a statement.
“While escorting the accused from the Immigration Court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken to a masked agent and detained on the ice,” Lander’s wife, Meg Burnett, wrote to X.
“This is still developing and our team is closely monitoring the situation,” Burnett wrote.
ICE did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Lander repeatedly asks officers to show him a judicial warrant before handcuffing him, following the video posted by Barnette.
The incident comes days after police handcuffed Sen. Alex Padilla of D-Calif, after he was forced to remove him from a press conference held in Los Angeles by Homeland Security’s Department of Crista Noem.
“If that’s what the administration is trying to do to the US senators simply because they have the authority to ask questions, imagine what they’d do to the Americans they dare to talk about,” Padilla said in a statement from the Senate floor on Tuesday.
