Los Angeles County is home to more than 5 million dogs, and more pet parents are feeding their dogs cakes and cookies at record levels.
“A lot of people love churros. Our churro cupcakes sell out every time we serve them,” said Adriana Montoya, who just opened La Ponedaria in Downey last weekend. “We put lines around the building.”
Montoya moved from his home kitchen to a brick-and-mortar store after seeing a huge response to his Mexican-style sweets, which are modeled after human favorites like pan dulce and empanadas.
“We use only three ingredients in all of our treats, which are healthy, easy for dogs to eat, and easy to digest,” Montoya said.
Pet treats are a $21 billion industry, expected to grow to $31 billion by 2031, according to Allied Market Research.
Nearly a dozen dog-friendly bakeries have opened in Los Angeles County.
There are three “Dog Bakery” stores alone.
“She’s our little fur baby, so we want to pamper her,” said Russia Contreras, a newlywed who brought her husband and pup to La Ponedarria for a treat. Said. “We don’t have kids, but we have a fur baby. We want to keep the tradition of Conchita, Chocolatito, and all the rest.”
According to the 2020 U.S. Census, these couples are among 70% of U.S. households with pets, compared to only 40% of households with children.
These numbers convinced Montoya that opening a brick-and-mortar store was the right investment for her business.
“We would like to expand and host dog birthday parties and events at the bakery,” Montoya said. “I think people realize how much dogs mean to them, and I want everyone to know there is a place they can go to show their appreciation for their dogs. I think that will continue to grow my business.”
