In a passing eye for Republicans in the Trump administration and Congress, Rep. Don Bacon, a Nebraska Republican who hasn’t shy away from asking President Donald Trump to ask him for a retraction, has shown he doesn’t support it.
The president’s proposed clawback includes millions of dollars related to the global health program.
“I told them I was no,” the lawmaker said of the measure, according to the New York Times. “We just want to make sure we are funding the drug. We want to prevent AIDS, it’s a noble program and a legacy of George Bush. We’ll put the marker there.
In a post in X last week, Bacon described the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Pepfaal) as “a noble program where America can be proud of its funding.”
The withdrawal package “suggests that we cancel $400 million from the PEPFAR program, which proposes to allocate $4.4 billion a year to provide bilateral assistance to countries that do not support American interests, such as South Africa,” a White House official told Fox News on Monday.
“The $400 million withdrawal eliminates wasted programming that doesn’t provide services to American taxpayers,” the official said, “The package doesn’t revoke life-saving assistance and in fact continues to provide billions of resources to implement the costs necessary to provide these services to maintain all individuals in treatment.”

Fox News Digital contacted Bacon’s office and requested comment on Monday, but no comments had been provided by the time of publication.
Bacon was the only House Republican to vote against the action to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico.
“I thought it was stupid. That’s what people told me. They said, ‘It’s so stupid. Just vote for it,’ according to the era, he said.

House leaders pressed Bacon to hold on his views more, telling him, “I stopped kicking President Trump with nuts,” as lawmakers said, the outlet reported. But lawmakers have shown that they will only be pushed back when needed.
Bacon pointed out, according to the outlet. “I like what the president did at the border, so that’s fine.”
“I want to fight for the soul of our party,” he said. “I don’t want to be the guy who follows a flute player off the cliff, and I think that’s what’s happening right now.”
