Loibal Films and TV Magnets added the power of stars to the celebration of Black History Month.
Actor Don Cheadle visited the school on Friday to share his experiences in the entertainment industry, acknowledging Black History Month and advocating social and humanitarian causes at the invitation of the Black Student Union.
Star is a director of Loibal Film and TV Magnets, and was launched three years ago at the Loibal Learning Center Campus.
NBCUniversal is a founding member of the program, aiming to prepare students from underrated backgrounds for careers in film and television production.
Cheadle shared a message with students about behavior, social responsibility and stardom.
“You invest in what you have to have and who you are and you are and you are,” Cheadle said. “They say you make a move three times. They write it first, then film it, then film the editing process.”
His words spoke directly to Nylan Williams, an 11th grade student who originally wanted to pursue acting but fell in love with the editor through the Loibal Program.
“I realized there’s more I can do, there’s more I want to do,” Williams said.
National DEI programs are under scrutiny and sometimes excluded. Student Nathan Zacharias felt that Cheadle’s presentation was a way to confront the values of diversity, equity and inclusion.
“He brings that charming sense of people, and he tells them about the problems at hand,” Zacharias said.
According to Blanca Cruz, principal of the Roybal Learning Center, the guest speaker proposed a call to encourage students to take action.
“It’s up to us to make sure that expression happens now,” Cruz said.
