California Flower Mall was already packed with shoppers who chose flowers and bouquets for their mothers and loved ones early on Saturday mornings.
The popular Flower District in downtown LA is scheduled to remain open 24 hours a day on Saturday, but buyers who tried to beat the crowd were packing a wholesale flower market.
People were seen picking up a large number of flowers for ready-made bouquets and DIY gifts.
“My suggestion is to buy packets, roses, flower packets, daisies, whatever you can. You can DIY and assemble it to save money.”
Flower prices were about 5% to 10% higher on this Mother’s Day, which was affected by tariffs on imported goods, but almost two-thirds of those surveyed by the National Retail Federation said they would buy flowers on Mother’s Day.
The same survey states that 73% of people celebrating Mother’s Day buy cards for their mothers, while 61% spend money on special outings such as dinner or brunch.
With 30 family-owned businesses in the market, there are a variety of flowers for shoppers, ranging from carnations to hydrangeas, orchids, roses, chamomile and more. The vendor said they have been working 24 hours a day since Tuesday, building arrangements and accepting shipments of flowers from around the world.
“It’s really important for these bootstrap vendors to have a good year for the rest of the year,” Chatoff added.
California Flower Mall will be open until 9pm on Fridays and will run 24 hours from 4am on Saturdays.
