Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has reduced downtown curfew as conditions stabilizes after a week of anxiety caused by an unannounced immigration enforcement raid.
Starting Monday, the curfew will be running from 10pm to 6am, replacing the wider restrictions that had previously been. The new time will apply to the downtown core, surrounded by 5, 10, and 110 highways.
Bass implemented a curfew last Tuesday amid reports of vandalism, looting and conflict with police during protests against the Trump administration’s immigration policy and famous immigration attacks in local businesses and other public spaces.

Authorities say the decision to reduce the curfew is due to ease levels of tension and improved coordination between demonstrations and law enforcement.
“Coupled with continued crime prevention efforts, the curfew has largely been successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who don’t care about the immigrant community,” Bass said in a statement. “Today, I’m narrowing the curfew as we are quickly adapting to changes in attitudes from Washington.”
The curfew was originally introduced after the Los Angeles Police Department declared illegal legislative assembly outside a federal building in downtown on June 10, and protesters closed parts of the 101 Expressway. The uncertainty also prompted the establishment of a citywide emergency declaration and a unified order with local and local law enforcement agencies.
LAPD chief Jim McDonnell said the narrow curfew reflects “development to reduce crime and vandalism,” but warned the department would maintain a strong downtown presence.

More than 30,000 people demonstrated on Saturday in a largely peaceful protest that was part of a nationwide move by authorities to protest the Trump administration’s actions. Millions of demonstrators from around the world participated in the protest. This coincided with a highly malicious parade in Washington, DC, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the US military, which happened to fall on the president’s birthday.
On Monday, councillors representing parts of the curfew zone expressed support for the decision to facilitate restrictions.
“Pressing the start time for a curfew is a step in the right direction,” said Councillor Isabel Jurad. “We are committed to supporting residents, small businesses and workers in downtown LA, and are proud to stand in the immigrant communities and peaceful protesters, enlivening and strengthening the city.”
