Dozens of people arrested for violence in Los Angeles during protests – NBC Los Angeles

Dozens of people were arrested for attempted murder, arson and other crimes during the day of violence and protests in Los Angeles.

A total of 42 arrests have been made by the Los Angeles Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to the LAPD. Crimes include attempted murder, looting, arson, failed disbandment, and assault with deadly weapons against police officers and other crimes.

Details regarding the attempted murder arrest were not immediately available.

“I hate this violence I saw,” said LAPD chief Jim McDonnell. “It’s escalating now. It was a bad thing to see the first night. After that, what we saw is getting worse and worse and more violent.”

People also oversaw commercial grade fireworks to executives, McDonnell added.

“It can kill you,” he said.

The arrest came during the third day in a row of uneasy days in Los Angeles. There, demonstrations were organized about the recent federal immigrant raid in Southern California. At least 50 arrests were reported over the weekend.

Tensions grew when a group faced with police moved away from the area to the nearby 101 Highway after protesting early in the afternoon outside a federal jail in downtown Los Angeles.

Rocks, bottles and other objects were thrown at police officers and patrol vehicles. McDonnell said some people brought big rocks into their backpacks and smashed them into small pieces and threw them at the officers.

“I have seen public anxiety before, but generally, days 2 and 3 are more violence,” McDonnell said.

McDonnell said the department is overwhelmed by the number of protesters and is working through attacks on executives, including Molotov cocktails, hammers and stones. Several Waymo driverless cars are on fire, and LAPD said looters broke into shoe stores and other businesses between Six Street and Broadway on Sunday.

Even when the National Guard moved, the violence lasted overnight in downtown Los Angeles. Brittany Hope reports NBC4 News at 6am on June 9, 2025.

LAPD sent cell phone alerts to demonstrators about illegal gatherings in the downtown Los Angeles area.

A fourth day demonstration of ice manipulation is planned for Monday.

“We recognize that immigration enforcement activities can cause deep fear and anxiety, especially in immigrant communities,” McDonnell said. “That’s why we are committed to treating transparency, accountability and the respect of Angeleno, regardless of the immigration situation.

“Our job is to keep everyone safe. We will continue to support peaceful protests and enforce criminal conduct laws. LAPD supports and protects the first right to amend free speech, which promises to respectfully treat all Angeleno, regardless of immigrant status.”

McDonnell said he spoke to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

About 300 Federal National Guard members were deployed on federal property in Los Angeles, including the Downtown Lattropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. McDonnell said that LAPD has had a very good relationship with the National Guard, working closely for several months during the Palisade fire that fired on January 7th.

During Sunday’s protest on Alameda Street, National Guard members threw tear gas cans and smoked rena bullets at the protesters. The crowd temporarily dispersed, but returned a few minutes later.

He generally accused President Trump of trying to create a spectacle rather than acting on “legitimate needs.”

The governor later said the Trump administration officially demanded that the illegal deployment of Los Angeles County troops be withdrawn and returned to his orders.

“It wasn’t a problem until Trump got involved,” Newsom said. “This is a serious violation of national sovereignty, burning tensions while pulling resources from where they are actually needed.

“Cancel the order. Return controls to California.”

This appears to be the first time in decades that a state National Guard has been revitalized without demand from the governor.
