Authorities identified the driver who died after leading a high-speed pursuit in Boyle Heights on Friday.
The driver was in a silver Aston Martin sports car that was rented when authorities detained him, lost consciousness and died, crashed into a light pole around 3am.
The driver was identified as 30-year-old Martin Soria.
After the pursuit ended with a crash, Soria attempts to escape, but is soon caught by an officer. According to the CHP, he lost consciousness when he was in custody.
The Aston Martin owner said Soria rented it from him through a luxurious car rental service.
“It seemed very cold. I was talking to him throughout the rental period. He would message me and wash the car and say he was going to take care of it,” said sports car owner Juan Orozco.
Orozco said Soria continued to extend his trip every day and was able to book an additional eight days, but he had wanted it for a month.
According to the CHP, Soria suffered from a “medical emergency” as it appears to have had cardiac arrest.
“There was a small amount of force used in the form of tackles to detain the driver,” said CHP Sgt. Dan Keene said. “When the fire department arrived at the scene, the driver began to show signs of distress and began vomiting. It is unclear whether he ingested anything or if impairment was a factor.”
Despite efforts to revive him, he died on the scene. The official cause of death of the driver is under investigation.
