Los Angeles police said Tuesday that an hours-long standoff with a man suspected of fatally shooting a security guard and store employee outside a Target in downtown Los Angeles continued.
The standoff began around 11:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Ingraham Street in the Westlake neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The suspect is inside the residence.
The Los Angeles Police Department announced earlier today that it was searching for a gunman after an armed security guard and store clerk were shot while trying to stop a shoplifter near a Target shopping mall in downtown Los Angeles.
Just before 9 p.m., officers were called to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of S. Figueroa Street. Two people were found with gunshot wounds at the Figueroa 7th Shopping Mall, and police responded to a security guard and a target. An employee said he tried to stop the shoplifter.
Police said the man was seen on security camera footage leaving the store with unpaid items in a suitcase and confronting security guards and employees. A man with a handgun opened fire, causing shoppers to evacuate.
Police said one of the victims, a 33-year-old armed security guard employed by the mall, returned fire. It was not immediately clear whether the gunman was hit.
The other victim was a 45-year-old Target loss prevention employee, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Raul Jobel said.
The armed guard was treated and released from the hospital. The employee remained in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.
