Los Angeles, CA – On November 13, 2024, the County of Los Angeles Commission on Alcohol and Other Drugs convened at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration to address crucial issues related to public safety and substance abuse prevention. The meeting was chaired by Tony Bell, who leads the Executive Committee, and included a diverse panel of commissioners representing various districts throughout Los Angeles County.
The agenda covered a wide array of topics, including updates on treatment and prevention programs, legislative changes, and a presentation on Driving Under the Influence (DUI) rehabilitation programs. Commissioner Howard Winkler, the longest-serving member of the committee, emphasized the significance of the commission’s efforts. “We are working to protect the public,” Winkler stated, reflecting the committee’s commitment to tackling the challenges posed by substance abuse within the community. His remarks resonated with attendees, underscoring ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety through education and rehabilitation.
The meeting commenced with a welcome from Chair Tony Bell, followed by a public comment segment that provided community members an opportunity to express their concerns and insights on matters within the commission’s jurisdiction. The commissioners reviewed the minutes from the previous meeting, discussed the implications of Assembly Bill 2449, and planned the commission’s calendar for 2025.
A significant portion of the session featured a presentation by Melinda Avey, Chair of the Sacramento County Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board, who shared innovative strategies currently being implemented in her county. This exchange of ideas is essential for fostering collaboration among different regions as they confront similar challenges.
Additionally, the commissioners addressed a vital recommendation for the Board of Supervisors concerning the rehabilitation alcohol program, specifically focusing on DUI applications. The insights from the Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) report provided a comprehensive overview of current treatment initiatives, highlighting the commission’s proactive stance in combating substance abuse.
As the meeting concluded, the commissioners shared information about upcoming events and initiatives aimed at advancing their mission. The next meeting is scheduled for December 11, 2024, at 12:30 PM, where discussions will continue on critical issues affecting the community.
