The former NCAA national skier was killed in an accident on the slopes of the Great Lake Tahoe area on Saturday, authorities said.
San Francisco’s Elary “Elly” Curtis, 26, was declared dead at the Palisard Tahoe Resort in Olympic Valley after suffering head injuries.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ellis Sobier said the Sheriff’s Department received a distress call at 3:45pm, but by the time deputies arrived Curtis was already dead.
Sheriff’s officials did not provide Palisades Tahoe with any other details or directive inquiries.
The ski resort did not answer questions from the Times, but in a statement they said they were “deeply saddened” by the accident and called Curtis “the beloved skier.”
Matt Lorelli, senior editor of Ski and Resort’s digital site Powder, writes that Curtis was seriously injured while dropping down the “challenging trail” of Palisade’s famous KT-22 lift.
Curtis’ death was one of three deaths that have occurred in the area in the past two weeks.
On March 29, Corona resident Roman La Cayo died in a snowboarding accident at Kirkwood Ski Resort, and seven-year-old Reno resident Adeling Rimes was killed by Boulder who collapsed at Diamond Peak Ski Resort in Incline Village.
While attending Dartmouth College, Curtis was the second team All-American in the huge slalom and finished in 8th in the NCAA Championship in Park City, Utah in March 2022. Curtis’ father, uncle and cousin also attended Ivy League school.
“Ellie Curtis was a hardworking, passionate and driven student-athlete whose passion was beyond the snow,” her Dartmouth coaches John C. Dwyer and Annie Jenny told me in an email. “Erie was kind, caring and loved being involved in many organizations and environmental projects.”
Curtis was also a three-time national all-academic ski team member. That means he scored a cumulative 3.5 grade point average and competed in one of three NCAA Regional Championships.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Curtis worked as an analyst for the California Public Utilities Commission.
