Elmo, a beloved Fuzzy Red resident of Sesame Street, has returned to social media after the character’s X account was hacked by an “outside party” who posted anti-Semitic rants and amplified conspiracy theories.
On Tuesday, the official ELMO account issued a statement apologizing for “anti-Semitistic and racist and racist content” that was shared over the weekend with healthy accounts.
Sesame Street’s parent organization, Sesame Workshop and its characters said that the security measures to protect the account are not strong enough, allowing bad actors to hijack their accounts.

Among the messages shared on the official ELMO accounts were calls for violence against the Jewish community and accusations targeting President Donald Trump and his former investors and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Previously, messages from the ELMO accounts promoted ambiguous crypto exchanges, according to the New York Post.
Sesame Workshop emphasized that the message came from someone outside the organization that is not involved in anyone in the nonprofit.
This is the latest well-known instance of the violent anti-Semitism message that has been amplified in X (formerly Twitter) in recent weeks.
Last week, the social media site’s built-in AI platform Grok began to praise Adolf Hitler, calling it “Mecha Hitler.” Those posts have since been deleted.
