Elon Musk says the two-party system is broken and he just launched a new political party to prove it.
On Saturday, Musk announced on X, the formation of the American Party, the social media platform he owns, and calls it a direct response to what he described as a corrupt political establishment that no longer represents Americans.
The announcement follows the Virus of X July 4 poll, which Musk asked if he wanted independence from what he called the “one who called the two-party (unipart) system.”

Over 1.2 million votes have been voted, with 65.4% saying yes.
“If it’s twice or a factor, you need a new political party and you get it,” Musk posted on Saturday. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and grafts, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the American Party is formed to give you your freedom back.”

The move comes shortly after President Donald Trump signed the law on Friday in the White House.
The $3.3 trillion law includes tax cuts, infrastructure spending and stimulus, which has attracted criticism from fiscal conservatives and libertarians. Musk did not directly refer to the bill in his American Party post, but the timing suggests a rise in friction between the billionaire and the president. Musk has previously warned that unconfirmed spending by both parties threatens the long-term health of the economy.
According to Musk’s post, the new party will target several important seats in the parliament. The goal is to create a swing block that is strong enough to maintain a balance of power and block what Musk considers as the worst overload for both Republicans and Democrats.

Some people who expressed the right concern in the comments section expressed concern that third parties could split the conservative vote and Democrats could win more easily.
“Your third parties will vote disproportionately from right to right, giving the left a path to power,” posted conservative commentator Sean Farasch.
Others, like Joey Mannarino, urged Musk to instead focus on GOP reform from within.
Critics also pointed out that X’s polls are informal and not limited to American voters, but are vulnerable to bots.
Third parties have struggled to traditionally be based on American politics, as the system is built for two dominant political parties. Electoral colleges, winner elections, and strict voting access laws prevent outsiders from competing meaningfully. Even when a third-party candidate fires, it rarely lasts beyond a single election cycle.

One of the biggest third-party initiatives in recent history was Lospero’s 1992 run.
He won nearly 19% of the popularity vote as an independent, but did not win the single electoral college vote. It was the closest third-party candidate to reach the White House after President Teddy Roosevelt’s famous Bull Moose party ran in 1912 against his former protégé William Howard Taft.
Others like Ralph Nader have tried at Green Party and at the Libertarian Party with Gary Johnson, but no third-party candidates have come close to winning the presidency.
