(KRON) — A Los Angeles County community near the Eaton Fire is receiving assistance after the wildfire tore through residents’ homes over the past week. Altadena, a census-designated area just north of Pasadena, experienced power outages, one of many problems caused by wildfires in the area.
To assist with the power outage, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Altadena Station received a donation from Tesla. Several Cybertrucks will be sent to the station and will also be used to power the station to provide free Wi-Fi, CEO Elon Musk wrote in a post on X.
The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team said in a social media post Saturday that the Cybertruck will be used as a battery bank for the sheriff’s department until power is restored.

Tesla plans to send more Cybertrucks to other affected areas in the Los Angeles and Malibu areas, Musk said. Those expecting Cybertruck deliveries in California will be delayed, as Tesla plans to use these new pickup trucks as a donation to the region’s worst-hit areas.
According to Tesla’s website, the Cybertruck can provide backup power to a home for up to three days. There’s enough power to power an entire coffee shop like this one in the Bay Area.
Although the Cybertrucks themselves won’t function as portable internet hotspots, Musk said these donated models will be equipped with Starlink and free Wi-Fi.
“I apologize to those who are planning to take delivery of a Cybertruck in California in the next few days,” Musk wrote on X, adding, “To provide power to Starlink internet terminals in the Los Angeles area that have no connectivity. “We need to use these trucks as mobile base stations.”
