Elon Musk has officially descended from Doge’s role

Elon Musk is beginning the process of resigning from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Tesla and SpaceX CEOs posted to X on Wednesday night, thanking President Donald Trump for the opportunity to cut unnecessary spending as his time as a special government employee is coming to an end.

“The @doge mission will be strengthened over time, merely to become a government-wide lifestyle,” Musk wrote in his post. The White House confirmed to Fox that the mask post was accurate and that off-boarding would begin Wednesday night.

Musk has been the official face of Doge since Trump signed an executive order to set up the office on January 20th. Doge then tore federal agencies to identify and end government overexpenditures, corruption and fraud.

He was officially employed as a “special government employee.” This is a role created by Congress in 1962, allowing executives or legislative departments to hire temporary employees for specific short-term initiatives.

According to data from the Government Ethics Bureau, special government officials are permitted to work “within 130 days within 365 days.” Musk’s 130-day time frame was set to dry from the inauguration day to May 30th.

Doge is a cross-sectional organization established to slim and streamline the federal government. According to Trump’s executive order, the group itself will be disbanded on July 4, 2026.

Mask and Trump have previewed previously when the role of masks is temporary and ends in spring.

“Technically, you’re a special government employee and you should be 130 days,” Fox News” Bret Baier asked Musk in an exclusive interview with members of the Musk and Doge team in April. “Are you going to go on past that or do you think it’s something you’re trying to do?”

“I think we’ve accomplished most of the work that was needed to reduce the deficit by $1 trillion within that time frame,” Musk replied.

Trump hinted at Musk’s departure in a comment to reporters on March 31, asking if he hopes that Musk will remain in his government role for longer than the prescribed 130 days.

“I think he’s amazing, but I think he has a big company to run,” Trump said in March. “And at some point he’s going to go back.”

“I’m protecting him as much as I can,” Trump said. “He’s a very talented guy. You know, I love very smart people. He’s very smart. And he did a good job,” the president added. “Doge has found numbers that no one can believe.”

More recently, Musk said in an April 22 Tesla revenue call he would take a step back from his job as Doge’s leader.

Doge Command’s chain revealed in court filings shows Musk is not a boss

“I think that if we start next month, May, the time allocation to Doge will be significantly reduced,” Musk said during a Tesla revenue conference call. “I think I have to keep doing that, the president’s term will only be heard to ensure that the waste and fraud we stopped will come back, and if it has the chance, it will continue to ring it. So I think you know, as long as the president likes to do so, I will continue to spend a day or two on government issues.”

“But starting next month, I will be allocating much more time to Tesla, as there will be major work to establish government efficiency,” he added.

In his mask work with Doji, Democrats and activists staged protests against the tech billionaire and his company, including tanking stocks in Tekra.

The mask has been Doge’s public face for months, but has not reported to acting chiefs, not employees at the US Doge Service, according to a court filing in March that shed even more light on the internal workings of the office.

Who is Doge’s newly identified administrator Amy Gleason? “World-Class Talent”

“Elon Musk does not work at USDS. I will not report to him. He will not report to me. To my knowledge, he is a senior White House advisor,” Amy Gleason, representative administrator at Doge, wrote in a declaration included in the court application.

Gleeson previously worked for US Digital Services, which was established in 2014 by former President Barack Obama as the Technical Office of the President’s Office of Executive Office. Trump signed an executive order in January, renaming his office to the US Doge Service and founding Doge.

Musk was the public face of Doge, but he works as a senior adviser to the president, saying he “does not have the actual or formal authority to make government decisions on his own,” White House officials said in another court filed in February.

Musk emerged as a keen supporter of Trump at the height of the summer election cycle, and officially supported Trump after his first assassination attempt with him on July 13, 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“I fully support President Trump and I hope for his quick recovery,” Musk posted to X shortly after the attempt, accompanied by footage of Trump raising his fist and screaming, “Fight, fight, fight!” After he was bloody by an attempted assassination.

Musk hosted Trump on X for a vast interview during the campaign trajectory

During Musk’s tenure as a special government employee, Trump praised the tech billionaire for his efforts to streamline the government and reduce overexpenditure, including during his first speech to a Congressional joint session since his second appointment.

“Thank you, Elon. He’s working very hard. He didn’t need this. He didn’t need this. Thank you. We appreciate it. We want to thank it. Here, even on this side, we want to thank it. They don’t want to admit it.
