The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has launched its latest public safety campaign. “Emergency light? It’s pulling to the right.”
The campaign’s purpose is to educate drivers about the importance of being careful and vigilant when driving near emergency vehicles, LASD said in a press release.
“It counts every second during an emergency. Whether it’s a sheriff’s unit or a police car, fire truck or ambulance, emergency vehicles rely on drivers to play their part and clear the road quickly and safely,” the release said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna added that drivers are not aware of what to do when emergency vehicles are approaching, and what to do when people ignoring emergency vehicles happen “too often.”
“This campaign is about saving lives by seeing those flashing lights in the rearview mirror and seeing how all the drivers respond,” he said.
LASD has given the following important safety advice to the public:
Keep alerts: Keep your music at a reasonable volume, avoid distractions, and listen to the sirens and watch the flashlight. Pull right: If safe, signal the vehicle to the right side of the road. Stop and wait: It will remain stopped until the emergency vehicle passes. Otherwise you will be instructed. Do not block intersections: If you are at the intersection when an emergency vehicle approaches, continue and take over.
“If you see an emergency light, pull it to the right. It could make the difference between life and death,” Sheriff Luna warned.

In the California Law 21806 CVC, when an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and sirens activated, the driver must pull to the right to stop.
